Multi-Unit Housing

Boston, Massachusetts | 2006

This studio was called "Variable Commitment Housing," and the goal was to develop a new model for multi-family housing, in which more space is afforded for chance interactions and socialization between residents of different units. In this scheme, each of the two families has their own interior stair, and their communal and private spaces are vertically interlocked. The folded strips and the cube study were inspiration for this interplay. Families can catch glimpses into each other's communal spaces without being able to access them, unless by mutual choice they meet up in the shared spaces at ground floor, penthouse, and mid-level terrace.
